What’s Montreal like?
I will talk about Montreal, Canada, where I live now.
Montreal is the second biggest city for population and economic scale next Toronto in Canada. I think it’s really big city. The official language is French. So people talk to me in French at restaurants and shops. But Montreal is bilingual city so usually people can also speak English.
As for me, I only know basic French so when people talk to me in French, I keep talking in English lol. Then they naturally switch to English from French. As long as you can speak English, communication is not a problem.
There is also Quebec City, which is in Quebec region like Montreal but here they speak French. In Quebec City, people try to protect their own culture of speaking French. So I’ve heard they treat English speaker like outsiders.
View of the city of Montreal is like Europe. There is many buildings. Montreal is called an art city. There is many art museums and wall art, it’s fun even just walking. But during winter season, temperature is like minus 20 degrees. So as long as possible, I try not to go out in the winter lol. But summer season is nice. I have heard summer is humid here but felt cool. Fan was enough even hot day.
My favorite thing about Montreal is that people are friendly. People often talk to me in the grocery store and train. Like, “ What time?” and “ What’s day?”. When I bought birthday cake to my boyfriend, the woman behind me said, “It’s good cake. For your birthday?” like that. When I was in Japan, it didn’t happen lol.
There are many free events especially summer, fireworks and music festival.
Also there are Santa Claus parades and Christmas markets during winter.
You can enjoy all year.
About transportation, there is metro and bus. Very convenient. We can buy monthly pass of 83dollars, unlimited bus and metro of Montreal. For me, compared to Tokyo, it’s very cheap.
I talked about many good sides of Montreal. Thank you.
